We have been meaning to do the little loop in Brownley for so
long, but other things are always more pressing and interesting, shame on us
for not actually bothering.
Apart from the tick box of seeing a bit of
'new' ground and finally doing the loop we weren't actually expecting anything
interesting. So, we were really surprised when we came across cobbles on the
level floor, wow - not seen that anywhere around Nenthead apart from
Tynebottom. Warning: beardy weirdy cobble viewing session.
Past this we
came to the rise that goes up to the Great Limestone Level on Brownley Hill
Middle Vein that you can abseil down. Further along the horse level we came to
a passing place, a slightly open bit of level with some prominent white
calcification and then we came to the shale bands, with a few falls and water
pools. Eventually we reached the junction with Brownley Hill Vein and here we
turned south west and climbed up into the stopes above the vein. The last time
we were here was in 2011 and it was nice to have a look at the artefacts up
there. We had lunch in one of the small flats and then it was back down and
out.
Simple trip, but surprisingly interesting. |
