Greenlaws Firestone Level Dig - The Break Through Workings (06/08/2022)

Back to Greenlaws Mine Trip Index

We keep on seeing various posts about what is happening at Greenlaws mine and the progress that is being made, so it was high time go and have a look. It has been 8 years since we last visited, at that time two workings had been accessed, but the main flats where still illusive.

When we arrived at the mine site, we noticed many new things, a shipping container was there that was being used as a generator house and a going underground station with a list of people down. There was a little 'hut' for the ventilation fan and the original winch had been upgraded many times over.

One of the biggest changes was the driving of a connecting tunnel in the great limestone that connected the rest of the workings by bypassing a collapsed stope. This breakthrough was in autumn 2018 and it allowed with additional digging, shaft bridging and various other obstacle clearing the team to reach as far as Cuthburt Colling's Crosscut in the north east. A large amount of flats have been accessed as a result of this. Including drops into parts of the Wagon Drift and Jackson's Level.

Quite a number of artefacts have been found, along with fantastic mineralisation of fluorite cubes (galore). Most of the workings now that are accessible have an electricity and water supply. This is an ongoing project since September 2009!
