I thought it was high time to take Hannah into a new mine that
she's not been down before, I felt that she was getting a bit fed up of doing
Brownley Hill and Smallcleugh all the time. I was wondering what to do when the
newly opened crosscut between Scaleburn and Rampgill came to mind. I haven't
been in to see it and it would also make a nice change for her to do a loop
rather than in and then out the same way as always.
First of all, we
have a look at the Brewery Shaft and then carried on along the level. The
constant water here was something new for her and she was a little put of at
first but then got going. We reached the Scaleburn junction and I explained
that we would be coming out from this on the way out. Shortly after this we
reached the area of Rampgill with the pronounced white calcification on the
walls and roof. For me this was old hat, but Hannah thought it was amazing and
we spent some time looking at the formations. Then it was on to the Engine
shaft, twin passages and finally we reached the Norpex door and the crosscut to
Scaleburn.
As usual, the standard of work from the diggers was
outstanding and the 'authentic' sign for Ramgill Vein was a very nice touch.
After the digs a little bit more and we were on the Scaleburn Vien. Here we
headed for the Horse Gin chamber, had lunch and then out.
