Thompson's Level, First Explore (11/01/08).

For a fair few months we have seen the work going on around Thompson's Level, then the new portal stone work and finally steel gate - all the time wondering what is down there. From various people we knew there was a collapse not far in, but there is nothing like seeing something for yourself.

I quick enquiry at the Heritage Centre and we had the key to go to check the level out. As expected the first section is stone arched, which then gives way to stone walls framed by a rock roof. This eventually (maybe a too strong a word, more like a few metres) give way to solid rock passage and the fall. The fall does look like it is a rise that has come in or been filled. It could be coincidence but there is a depression on the surface which could correspond with the rise.
