Dowgang Burn Woods, Levels, Nenthead, Cumbria.

Back to Mine Index

A few years ago we discovered a level in the woods west of Dowgang Burn along the track that leads to the old coal mine. Since then we have come across more levels in this area. All the levels hit a sandstone outcrop and it looks like the levels mined Firestone. The levels unfortunately all slope inwards and so you get water flow into them, as a result they are silted up and in some places the going can get hard.

We have not been successful in finding names for these levels, some seem very old whilst others give the impression of having been worked in the last 100 years or so. Since no names have been found they have been simply categorised by how north each one is in the area, North 1 being the furthest north and North 4 the most southerly.
